Every March, we recognize Women’s History Month — a time to honor the achievements and contributions of women throughout history and in our modern world. At The Fairy GoddessMother Nannies & Domestics Agency, this celebration is close to our hearts because women are at the center of the caregiving and domestic work that keeps families strong and thriving.
The Essential Role of Women in Caregiving and Domestic Work
Did you know that 91% of nannies and childcare workers in the U.S. are women? (Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2023). These women are the backbone of childcare and household management, supporting families in countless ways — from nurturing children to managing homes, and providing critical emotional support.
Yet, despite their vital role, many women in caregiving professions face challenges, including low wages and limited access to benefits like health insurance or paid time off. According to the National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA):
Nearly 60% of domestic workers are paid low wages, and
About 23% live below the poverty line, even while working full-time.
These statistics highlight why recognizing and advocating for women caregivers is so important — not just during Women's History Month, but all year long.
Women Who Inspire Us — Past and Present
Throughout history, women have been at the forefront of caring for families and communities. This month, we reflect on the trailblazers who made caregiving and advocacy their life's work:
Marian Wright Edelman, founder of the Children’s Defense Fund, has spent her life fighting for children’s rights and quality education.
Dolores Huerta, labor leader and civil rights activist, co-founded the United Farm Workers, advocating for fair labor conditions — including for women and families.
Mary McLeod Bethune, educator and activist, created opportunities for Black children and women during a time of intense segregation and inequality.
Today, modern-day caregivers and domestic workers continue this legacy, providing critical care that allows families to grow, thrive, and contribute to society.
Thanking the Women Who Keep Families Thriving
This month, we say a heartfelt thank you to the nannies, housekeepers, and caregivers who work tirelessly, often without enough recognition, to support families. Whether it’s rocking a newborn to sleep, guiding a toddler’s first steps, preparing nutritious meals, or offering emotional support to busy parents, these women are shaping the next generation.
Some important facts to remember:
Women make up more than 80% of all caregivers, both paid and unpaid (Source: Institute for Women’s Policy Research, 2021).
The care economy, largely driven by women, is valued at hundreds of billions of dollars annually, yet many women remain underpaid and under-protected (Source: Center for American Progress).
Without caregivers, millions of parents wouldn’t be able to participate in the workforce, showing how essential caregiving is to the economy and society.
